Sgt Jeffery Shaw EOW 11-12-09 Sergeant Jeffery Shaw of the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department was killed in an automobile accident on State Road 14 just west of County Road 100 East. At about 1500 hours, the driver of a truck who was traveling southbound on State Road 14, began to veer off of the roadway. His truck crossed the center line as he over-corrected and struck Sergeant Shaw's patrol car along the driver's side. Both vehicles became engulfed in flames after the impact, leaving them unrecognizable. Sergeant Shaw was extricated by rescue personnel and transported to Kosciusko Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead. A passerby pulled the driver of the truck out of his vehicle. He sustained minor injuries. Life is truly precious and there is no guarantee as to what tomorrow may bring. If you know a firefighter or police officer who has touched your life, please let them know you appreciate them and what they do. Standing beside a road with your head bowed as a Hearse passes is a sad way to remember one of our heroes. To know that you were able to thank them personally will be something that they and you will remember always. Respectfully, Jerry and Linda

Remembering Fallen Heroes On Saturday, October 10th, members of the fire fighting community, City, County and State officials as well as family members and citizens took time to remember firefighters who had given their lives "In the Line of Duty". Family members of three fallen firefighters placed a rose beside the retired helmet of their loved one. Commissioner Linda Bloom on behalf of the County, declared today as "Firefighter Day" and Deputy Mayor Purcell honored the memory of those firefighters with praise for their dedicated service to our communities. Police Memorial Ceremony 2009 |

Everyone Holds Their GroundAt 7th Annual Police Memorial Mayor Tom Henry, City and County Officials, police officers as well as citizens joined Family Members of the nine Law Enforcement Officers who have died "In the Line of Duty" as they were remembered at the Seventh Annual Police Memorial Ceremony. Honor Guard and Drum and Pipe Brigade Members, as usual, sent chills up and down everyone's spines as the Bagpipes played and officers marched. Despite up to 47 MPH wind gusts, all the participants at this year's ceremony were able to stay upright. Unfortunately, we can't say the same for the dozen donuts which flew off the table and made their way into the mighty St Mary's River.(Talk about Dunkin Donuts) Thanks to some good old fashion Duct Tape, concrete blocks and rope, we were able to keep everything else in-place. POLAR PLUNGE 2009 Mayor, Councilman, Police, Fire and more take the plunge for "Special Olympics" At noon today, Mayor Tom Henry, Councilman Mitch Harper, several police officers and firefighters along with many supportive groups took the 2009 Polar Plunge in support of the "Special Olympics". This is the second year St Francis College hosted the event on their beautiful Campus. With temperatures hovering at 32 degrees, it didn't take long for the "plunging ritual" to be completed. The Mayor went in so fast that my camera caught only his splash and his departure from the water. Mayor Henry is moving fast Mitch Harper was almost as fast as the Mayor Firefighters joined in on the fun Police Officers cannon ball the FWFD Dive Team (MORE POLAR PLUNGE 2009 PICS )
